According to the Australian Government website Your Home "The average Australian home is responsible for around 7 tones of greenhouse gas emissions each year." Dr Niraj Lal delivered a TEDx Sydney speech that demonstrated just how much coal each Australian consumes in one year he also explain how energy is generated and the benefits of using solar power.
The Your Home website advises homeowners to reduce their household emissions by: using energy efficient heating and cooling choices, energy efficient hot water, low powered lighting, home automation, renewable energy, batteries, smart meters, in home displays and efficient smart appliances.
Below is a brief overview of how homeowners can reduce their energy consumption in a few of the areas mentioned above:
Heating and Cooling (40% of home energy usage):
- Remove draughts
- Use double glazed windows
- Zone heating systems
- If using central heating and cooling systems limit cooling to 24 degrees in summer and heating to
18 degrees in winter
- If you are designing a new home try to position the house so that it faces north, and incorporate
the use of double glazed windows and insulation.
Hot Water (21% of home energy usage):
- Choose an energy efficient hot water service that heats enough water for your household.
sa.gov.au recommend reducing shower time, utilising efficient shower heads and fixing
dripping taps.
